So I'm not one for new year's resolutions, especially unrealistic ones, but I am a fan of planning and resetting intentions. Last year I read DIY MFA by Gabriela Pereira, which is amazing and every writer should check it out. In it, she describes a three facet system for balancing your work. These facets are "write with focus," "read with purpose," and "build your community." Each is important and none should be neglected, so I came up with a plan for my new year.
Write With Focus
I'll be working on a few different projects in 2017, but my main project will be drafting my second book. During the week I want to sit down every night and work on it, even just a little. I give myself weekends off, unless I feel especially motivated one day, because I believe rest is just as important as work.
Read With Purpose
Last year I set out to read more New Adult books so I could get a better sense of what's already out there, but I didn't set any numerical goal for it and it petered out pretty badly. So this year I set my Goodreads goal with intention. Each month I want to read one new adult title, one nonfiction book, and one writing resource.
Build Your Community
It's easy to get overwhelemed by the amount of social media outlets that are available, but I've found that Instagram is really where I connect with other writers and readers best, so I plan on focusing my energy there. I also belong to a small writer's group and I want to keep that going this year too.
What kinds of intentions are you setting for 2017? Let me know in the comments.
